View Full Version : Are Schwartzi cories slow eaters?

I have ten Schwartzi cories in a QT and they eat s-l-o-w-l-y! My other cories (Sterbai, panda, julii, etc.) frantically devour pellets and wafers that I drop in. However, it seems that all my Schwartzi think they are at an upscale gourmet restaurant, slowly savouring the food. Is this a typical behavior of Schwartzi?
PS. Unlike my other cories, many of them sit on a leaf rather than at the bottom. Is this normal, too?

Wow are you taking pics? They sound adorable!
Not sure my advice will help as I only have habrosus... But they take forever to go through a 1/4 of a sinking wafer (which are about <1/2" per whole piece). They "whisker" it for a bit, then sit back & seem to be swallowing or something further back in their mouths, then they'll tickle the piece again. If the other fish don't catch on before lights out, sometimes I'll find a tiny piece the next morning - and for sure the snails were helping out!
I've seen video of standard cories eating bloodworms, and was fascinated by the way they'd just hold the worm and occasionally nibble in a few bits, then relax, then nibble again. Not sure if the cories I saw were schwartzei, tho.
Sorry, I don't think that was very helpful...

I have only fed algae wafers to my schwartzis a couple of times, and they definitely did NOT go at it quickly. I saw one or two of them peck at it a little, that's it. I think in both cases the stuff was gone the next day, but they definitely didn't eat quickly.
Mine do a lot of cruising the tank nibbling on algae and stuff.
Hope this helps.

Mine do the same. Mine peck at driftwood, leaves and filter intake pipes, which none of my other cories do. So, I guess Schwartzi are just different!

They're the first cories I've ever had. Whether different or not, I like 'em. :)

well, they are in QT and it takes many fish a few days to get used to a tank and start eating normally.

I agree with coach_z, they're probably still checking out the new tank, new food. Do you know if they were wild caught or home grown? That could make a difference too.
