they are from Lake Malawi and are pretty mild. They can be aggressive to other male peacocks though. Its hard to sex them at a small size, but you can look for pointed anal and dorsal fins.

Are you talking about ruby red peacocks? If so then they are from lake malawi http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/red_peacocks.php is a good article abou thte red peacocks.
I had a breedign group of these in my 90g african tank. I raised a group of fry up and the dominate male started showing color at 1 1/2" but only 1 out of 7 had any color, the rest were all brown.
But normally peacocks will start coloring up at around 2"+ depending on their rank. The color will first start on their head around their gills.
I had to give my ruby red peacocks away recently as they were getting picked on in my tank, even though my tank isn't perticularly aggresive. So i would say they are one of the more peaceful peacocks and shouldn't be housed with aggresive fish(mine was in with red empress,P.electra, Lab.perlmutt and Rusties, all known to be fairly peaceful but still picked on the peacocks.)
ya thats the fish! thanks!
