Hey guys,

I've a 40'ish galon tank with 4 young convicts, a few female guppies and my 3 BN pleco's who're also still relatively small.

Todays question is this; 2 of my convicts paired up pretty quickly after both went through a period of accelerated growth, leaving the other 2 behind. They have spawned twice so far in the space of roughly 6 weeks; with the female retaining breeding colours throughout.

I came home today to find that the female has reverted to normal colour, the male has grown further and has began attacking the female as it does the others.

**Please note: the aggression is no more than chasing. theres 0 damage to any of the fish involved.**

I believed con's to be monogomous fish, what would have caused this rift between the lovers?

Convicts will switch mates if there's a more suitable or ready female in the tank, most of the time convicts only split when the female doesn't want to spawn and the male does. He should choose a new mate, my jacks went trough this many times before I got a pair out of them.

ah i see! Thank you for the answer Nano :] If there's no other viable females in the tank is it possible that they'll pair again?

The may try again. It can be a permanent split for some reason or temporary. Mine will drop 3-4 broods, split for awhile and then resume a few months later.

Cons will do that.
My male just recently ate a batch of month old fry. If they feel threatened or that something is wrong, they will eat the babies and become aggressive.
