If I had the choice I'd go with Red Ceibals. Hardly anyone keeps them.

Take a look at my avatar and guess. Not as nice a picture as Bill's, but you get the idea. As for no one keeping ceibals, it's partly because the are nasty, and even less people keep oblongum. Interesting story about my oblongum pair. I broke their bond by removing the fry, and a month later, my tank got wiped out. As he was dying, she never left his side, not even for a second. Very smart fish.

That is soooo sweet!! Who says our fishy friends dont ahve little personalitys of their own??!! My Oscars knew the sound of my voice.. they didnt care much for my hubby (probably cuz he never fed them, talked to them, or cleaned their tank) But Blondie would even let me pet her!!

I recentyly lost my female Oblongum and the male is so sad now. Less active and less color.

I would get 8-10. Todd is the only person I know of selling them ATM. Is that where you are looking to get them from?

I think 10 would be plenty. I got my pair from Todd. Beautiful fish, and he shipped them very well. Both in seperate double bagged breather bags. The male poked a hole through both with his dorsal spine, and the female mad it through one. I don't know what he has in stock right now, but he might have a younger pair.
As far as feeding bio-gold, I see no problems. With keeping the temperature low, they do well at low temperatures, but it's not necessary. It just means you don't need a heater. I kept mine at 82, and they bred the week I got them. I don't know where Bill and Todd keep theirs, but 82 worked for me.
And Bill, I'm so sorry that your female died. I really hope you can find another one, and I feel your pain.

I feed all my fish NLS pellets as a staple diet, but they'll eat just about anything you toss in there.
Any species of cichlids from Paraguay are accustomed to cooler temps than most "tropical" fish. Keeping them too warm all the time will actually shorten the lifespan of Gymnogeophagus, but doesn't seem to affect the Australoheros the same way from what I've read. Winter temps as low as the 60's won't bother them though, and a heater really isn't necessary.

Ok.... so if Im lucky enough to get them to breed, do I need a heater for the fry??

No, the fry aren't any different than the adults regarding water temp. They do prefer hard, alkaline water.
