It feels like Christmas is coming... the anticipation is going to kill me. I am picking up a baby Chevron Tang this week. I have only seen it available 1 time in all my years in the hobby and it was early on (1990's) when I really didn't know much, nor did I have a tank suitable for them. Now that I have a tank suitable, it has been a couple years of searching and asking LFS to find me one to no avail. Just today a local high end coral seller www.reefodyssey.com said they were getting 2 in and I was first to put my name on the list for one. $140 for a 2.5". I should be picking it up on Tues or Wed and will take plenty of pictures once I get it.. until then here is a stock photo of what they look like. :woot:

It will certainly be the most expensive fish I have ever bought. My Potters Wrasse held that title for the last 2 years, but it was only $90. I am going for a "Hawaii" theme with my fish selection it seems... Potters Wrasse, Potters Angel, and now Chevron Tang.

LOL, most people say the other way.. juvi's look much better than adults due to their bright colors.. but either way I like them.

Not yet... email I got last night said it will be ready for pickup at 11:30am on either Thur or Friday. I will know the night before when he gets the tracking number on exactly which day it is. I will be taking off work just to pick this guy up and still in the bag so it doesn't have to be acclimated twice.

Well I got it.. unfortunately it has a very rough night. :( Got beat up real bad. First I tried it in my 75G and my potters angel went crazy on it fast.. within a couple minutes I knew that wasn't going to work so I put the tang in my 29G for the night to rest.. thinking that would be safer. This morning my Falco hawkfish was beating the crap out of it. Tang went from perfect fins when I got it to all frayed this morning. So I had to tear down/pull out all the rocks out of both my tanks, caught both the potters angel and tang, and did a swap. Potters angel is now in my 29G and tang is back in the 75G and no one bothering it now. I would love to take pics when the lights come on but I feel so bad for the tang I want it to heal before I take a good picture. What a stressful night/morning it has been.

Not the best picture.. here it is.. like I said, it had a rough first night and has some battle wounds that need to heal and also fatten up a lot, but it is very active in the tank, eating off the rocks, glass, and sand all day long and no one is bothering it except the cleaner wrasse which it loves and can't seem to get enough of.

Here is an updated pic.. been a very rough week for this fish and I had to setup a hospital tank to treat it, but it is recovering very nicely. :) The white streak at the top is glare from the lights, not something on the fish.

Tang died today... went downhill really fast over the last 24 hours. I did all I could do and it didn't help. That was a waste of $300. $140 for the tang and $160 for a hospital setup + meds + test kits.

Dang, sorry about that :(

At least you have what you need in the future should you need a HT or QT.

Think you'll try another down the road?

When you first posted the question, my thoughts were NO WAY do I want to try another one. Actually I was so depressed that I was wondering how I could just "get out of the hobby" for a while because the death of that fish took a toll on me. I don't get attached to my fish like I do with other pets like cats and dogs, probably because you don't really interact with fish too much. I don't name them, just call them their common names. On the other hand, I feel a huge responsibility to give the absolute best care I can for everything in my aquarium, especially the fish.

I made several major mistakes with this fish and what kills me inside is all the mistakes I knew better. I knew I should have QT'd the fish, but was just lazy. I knew there was a very very strong possibility of my potters angel attacking the tang, but I risked it at first and within just a minute of being placed in the tank a lot of damage was done. This particular fish was just shipped via 2 day air, not overnight for some reason, and then acclimated once when it was received, then again when I got it home that night, then placed into a tank and immediately attacked. Way to much stress and wounds from the start. I tried to do the best I could at the time, moved the tang to what I thought was a better environment, only to learn it wasn't. The next day (I got the fish home around 10pm and in the tank at 11pm) I setup a Hospital tank to do things properly at 11am the next day, only 12 hours after the fish first went into one of my tanks, but the damage was done and it was too much from that point on for the tang to handle. If I had done it correctly from the start I am sure it would have been a good fish.

But now, after several hours to go through the emotions, I am feeling better and now I think I probably will try another one when I can find it. Took me 10 years to find this one locally. I can probably find one online though, but getting one from one of the major reputable online places is difficult. Only seen them at a couple sites that I know nothing about.

I hear ya but don't beat yourself up too much. Sometimes the more difficult fish can do better going right into a mature display with plenty of rock (especially if the fish is a hider/grazer.

I have seen Chevrons pop up a bit in LADD a few time over the past few months and between them and Bluezoo, you should be able to find a nice healthy fish to start you off on the right foot,

Thanks, this time I am doing it right.. QT tank has been running for over a month now. I tore it down completely and cleaned it really good and let it sit for a week to air dry after my last sick fish was in it and added 40lbs of live rock full of algae out of my sump into the QT tank for the Tang to graze on. I learned my lesson big time on my first attempt so I won't be making those mistakes again. I just hope a 29G won't stress out the tang too much.

It has arrived, floated for 15 minutes in the bag to get temp adjusted and is now in a bucket getting drip acclimated for the next 45 minutes. After that it will be placed in a QT tank for at least 2 weeks to observe. Pictures to follow later this evening once it is adjusted to the QT tank. I don't want to put any lights on it right now to avoid stress but in the bucket it looks perfect from what I can tell.

Best pic I could get real quick. You can't see it in the picture but it has a lot of blue in its top and bottom fin.

That is one cool looking tang. Are those white spots just the specs on the glass?

Ace25
12-10-2010, 10:13 AM
The white dots are on the glass. I hadn't had the light on the tank in a couple weeks and when I turned it on I was surprised to see about 1000 hydroids all over the glass.

I learned yesterday that this Chevron loves feather dusters. It ate ever micro feather duster on the rocks in just a couple hours. It also ate Spirulina and Mysis but so far hasn't touched the algae. At first I put algae on a clip but that seemed to scare the tang, so I took it out and rubber banded some to a rock but it still didn't touch it the first day. It seems to be a shy fish, likes to hide in the rocks a lot, but also a curious fish as when I get right up to the tank it likes to come out of hiding and check me out and flash its fins all big for me.

Update.. things were going perfect.. until yesterday. Yesterday morning I noticed 2 big white spots on it (ich) and when I got home from work it had 4 spots. No mistake this time, it was ich. So when I got home yesterday I pulled out the cleaner shrimp (who doesn't do anything, never seen it even try to clean a fish) and dosed the recommended dosage of Cupramine (copper) meds. This morning I still saw the 4 dots on it but I just got home and looked and the dots are all gone. I know that doesn't mean the ich is gone, but it is showing me I caught it very early and the copper meds are working.

So.. today I reset the clock and call today "day 1" and I will continue dosing copper per instructions and make sure the Tang is QT'd for a full 6 weeks from today. The tang still appears perfect, very active, very hungry, and not trying to scratch itself so I am confident things will still work out good. I am not sure where the Ich came from. I hate to blame LADD on it, but my QT tank was emptied, cleaned well, and run for over 6 weeks with nothing in it to make sure if there was any ich from the last time I used it they would be gone. I have not used any utensils from one tank to another to spread it around nor are any fish in any of my other tanks showing signs of ich, so my best guess is the Tang came with Ich and it just now started to show, but being a Tang I expect to see ich on them 99.9% of the time anyway.

Well, #2 just died today. No idea why. It was doing great, eating great, nothing visibly wrong at all. Got home today and stuck to my filter. Pulled it out and looked closely and not one thing wrong with it at all other than not being alive anymore. I called LiveAquaria right away and they immediately refunded my $ so that was great, although I would much rather have the fish instead. :( I think I am done with Chevron Tangs now.

Do you think the cupramine possibly killed some unseen inverts in the chevron's tank, causing an ammonia spike? Did you test the water conditions during the week and a half you had the tang? The tank may have experienced a mini cycle, seeing as how you said you had nothing in the qt for six weeks prior to adding the tang. Just a thought. I'm sorry to hear about the tang's death. :(

Ace25
12-20-2010, 6:52 PM
Yup, tested for ammonia daily and even was paying extra close attention to the tangs breathing and fins to check for ammonia burns.

Also tested copper 2x a day and never exceeded .25. I was still in the "ramp up" phase of copper treatment and hadn't even reached full strength yet. I was taking it very slowly. I did have a few asterina starfish that were starting to die from the copper, but only about 5 that I saw and today they are on the glass still moving around. Aiptasia also shriveled up from copper but didn't die. So I know copper levels were not high enough to even cause death to inverts.

With 40lbs of live rock pulled right out of my sump on my other tank and cycled for 6 weeks I doubted I was going to have any cycle problems but out of abundance of caution I was still testing for ammonia to make sure I still didn't get one.

I am really just left scratching my head this time. I really thought I did everything right from acclimation to QT and things seemed to be going very well. Only 1 day I saw a tiny problem and that was gone within 24 hours after adding first small dose of copper. At no time did the fish seem to be in distress of any kind. I know I am bummed again though because this is one fish I have wanted for a very long time and I think after this one I am calling it quits on any tangs until later on in life when I can build my "dream tank" which will be at least 800G.

Ya, I am really really bummed about this one but at least this time I do not have a guilty conscience about this one dying. First one I blame myself for, second one I can't do that because I feel I did everything possible in my power to make sure it was safe from harassment, well fed, good home, and I paid way more attention to the QT tank in terms of water quality than I do on my main tank and dosed/monitored meds and dosed on the low side to be extra cautious. I am just left with a loss for words and ideas on what caused the demise of the second tang, but it is now frozen in a zip lock bag in my freezer just in case LiveAquaria wanted it shipped back to do any testing to find out why it died, but from my short conversation with them they didn't seem to care about why it died at all. No questions about how I acclimated or QT'd the fish, I asked them if they wanted the dead fish back or even a photo to prove it had died but they didn't even want that. In theory I could have a live fish and getting my $ back but I am way to honest of a person to think of doing something like that and like I said before I would much rather have a healthy chevron tang than my $ back so I have no motive to do anything shady.

So that is the end of my Chevron Tang adventures for the foreseeable future, now onto trying to find and purchase that elusive Kuiteri wrasse for my tank.
