Hi everyone....I am starting up my small company again....i breed fish and sell them to pet stores locally.
anyway, since i havn't been up and running in a couple years, i am not up to date on some fish. What would you recommend for breeding. i was wondering if there is any certain fish that people are looking for these days.
i would appreciate any info you could give me. thanks

Convicts won't sell well. There going price is only a couple dollars. If you can actually be efficient about it, I would try overtaking a small store's feeder fish supply. Being, sell them better and cheaper fish for any quantity they want them in, (yes, quantity is a big deal at pet stores.) Of course, you probably know to go for the smaller stores. So try guppies and rosy red minnows if you can. If you need anything else PM me.

My LFS said they would like to buy locally raised angelfish. Fancy guppies might be another big one, along with cories, mollies, platies, and swordtails. You may not get a whole lot for them, but they seem to be big sellers at pet stores.
If you have the time and enough tanks I would say discus, they can be very profitable.

Not sure what the demand is like in NY but it is hard to find a good selection of Dwarf Cichlids that go anywhere from $20-50 a pair when you do find them .. maybe good profit involved

My post focused on selling feeders. My point was that you could go to the smaller stores and sell them however many Rosies, (guppies, etc) that they wanted and you could make money off that.
Besides that, I wrote a long post and this exact topic a few months ago. I'll find it and get back to you.

This here is a great breeding thread. It's a bit long but it covers a lot of ground.

Ahem.. good quality live bearers. :) such as Endlers (full strain) and a few different populations would be nice. Other rarer species of live bearers would be nice too, merry widows, limias, goodiedes and halfbeaks.
Also you can try your hand at raising The Kaudern's Cardinal, also known as the Banggai Cardinalfish, which is a saltwater fish. These guys are easy to breed and are from a limited location in the wild. It is better to buy tank raised over wild caught. :)

I'm not too knowledgable on breeding but I know rams are hard to come by everywhere. Every store I talk to says they get as many as they can but can't always get them. Might check around with them. If I were you, I'd just contact a bunch of stores in your area and see what they need the most and what sells best. I'm not sure if different fish are more popular in certain areas or not but I know there are lots of fish that seem popular on this website that I've never even seen around here so it does seem somewhat regional.
