African Butterfly cihlids (anomalochromis thomasi..) will do well singly;
but i feel having fish in pairs usually brings out better behavioral patterns and colouring..

i have 2 breeding pairs in a 30" tank; they are well suited for a community as generally not too aggresive; these were originally in with barbs; tetras etc with no major problems..

open spawners;
keep at ph 6-7 in nice soft water and feed a varied diet and theyll do well!!

which afican butterflies are you talking about? because there are also surface feeding african butterflies (they are mostly black and brown with very wide pectoral fins)

****never mind this is the cichlid forum sorry****
