View Full Version : Need ID please...
Hi , i have some little 'feather' or like three leafs evrywere in my tank, they are white, at first they were little but in 1 week they double their size, about 1/8 ".
Thay are probaly filter feeder, but what species ?
Also i found a green buble in one of my live rock, it is hidden in a hole, its about 1/8' too, what could it be ?
Thank you. :)
Hi Gee - not sure what the 'feather' thing is...hard to say without a photo.
The green bubble, however, is easily identifiable as Valonia - or bubble algae. They can be a real nuisance, but pose no threat to the tank or its inhabitants. If you can reach it, gently rock it back and forth until it detaches from the rock. Larger valonia will release spores into your tank causing more valonia - smaller ones may not cause problems if you accidentaly pop them while trying to remove them. Another option is to add a mithrax (emerald) crab or two and see if they eat it; I had great success with them when I had an unusually large valonia outbreak, but they tend to shy away from the larger bubbles.
Thank you , i am waiting for my close up lens for my kodak, as soon as it comes in i will post a pic of the "feather".
If i let the valonia in is it bad , it is very small and in a hole, i dont think i can reah it without bursting it, i found it while looking at the rocks with a magnyfyer.
One more think, i saw a little green bug and a bigger white one fighting in the tank, or maybe having "sex" wich i doubt, about 1/4 inch each, then last night i saw a picture of a green manthis shrimp, i hope its not a baby manthis fighting with evryone, it was on the back of the white one for a good 30 min, and they were moving very fast, like a fight.
Thanks
Leaving the valonia in the tank won't cause any huge problems, other than the possibility of more valonia. If it is only 1/8" in diameter and in a spot where you're likely never be able to get in and gently remove it, I go ahead and pop it. It's a tough call, but it's probably so young/small that it won't release any spores.
Also very difficult to identify the green and white bugs without a photo. I'm no mantis expert (never had the displeasure of owning one) but I would think a mantis would have killed the other bug in far less than 30 minutes. Maybe someone else who has more mantis experience will chime in on this one.
Thanks a lot !
The white feather seems to slowly go away, but i now have 3-4 valonia bubble, i was told to let them go and maybe it will die when my tank mature. I will also get a emerald crab, they are suppose to eat valonia and are very cool too.
I now have something new, green grass evrywhere, front glass, back glass, rock ...... evrywhere, and i cant find any info on it, even on the hichicker FAQ's
Here is a picture, as a bonus my new friend Bernard the hermit is posing :D
here is another shot, the shell is about 1 inch long to give you an idea.
