My peppered cory cats spawned!! :nilly: I have a total of 14 eggs and she is still laying as we speak. I had come home after buying more zebra danios (previous ones died) and I notice that she was being chased by males again and then I saw 2 white dots on her anal fins. Right before my eyes she glued the eggs to the tank and has been doing this for an hour.

Some of you might remember me setting up my 55g tank a while ago and I've been busy with school to come back on the forums. Unfortunately my tank didn't cycle with Stability and I purchased safe start which is giving trace readings of everything. My ammonia is way down almost 0. The thing is my tank is still cycling and she chose the worst time to have babies -_-. Hopefully they make it.

Anything special I need to do to raise them? She hid some well in the plants and some I can't find but I know she laid them. Will the babies just eat micro organisms in the tank and left over food? How long till the eggs hatch? :help::perv:

I'll take some pics of one of the popular places she laid eggs. I think she is a pretty dumb momma though it is her first time. She laid most of the eggs out in the open where all the fish can see. Probably less than 6 are well hidden.

You may want to move the eggs using a razor blade into a breeder net in an area with good water flow to prevent fungus some methyl blue helps with this also. Leaving the eggs where they are they will most likely be eaten by the corys themselves or other fish.

I have no where else to put the eggs. The nice part is that she laid them right on the flow of the aquaclear 70 I have. So the water is directly flowing through those eggs in the picture. I doubt they will bother eating it because they need to work for it.

EDIT: oh i see, didn't know breeder nets could be in the tank itself. Might just get one when I have the chance. Though saving only 6 eggs out of the 20 she laid is cheap :( wish I could find the others she laid.

with a molly in the tank you will end up with a fat and happy molly and no eggs, regardless of where they are laid. if the eggs go unnoticed until they hatch the fry will most likely be eaten. i know you didn't want to hear that, but it will happen. mollies are gluttons, lol.

the best way to ensure a good hatch rate is to remove the eggs to another tank, that way you can do what is needed for the eggs/fry without affecting your main tank. fry need fed a lot more than adult fish and in a separate tank (10 gallon would be perfect!), you are able to do that without your other fish stealing the food and eating too much.

congrats on your cories spawning though! i love watching my albinos spawn, they do it at least once a week!

I think I'm just gonna let it be. Out of all the visible eggs, only 2 are round and plump (3 dimensional looking) the rest just look like white stains and flat. Almost as if they were popped or something. None of the fish did anything to them I've been watching the eggs. So I think I'll let nature run it's course for this batch.

with cory eggs, if they are white or turn white after being laid, then they are not viable and will not hatch.

Is dad suppose to fertilize while the eggs are being laid? Or did she lay them because they are fertilized? Cause the two males seemed to just be bugging her the whole time but never were there when the eggs where laid. I hope they weren't noobs at doing the dirty cause that is embarrassing >.>

from what i have read and what i have seen in my own tank, the female takes the males sperm into her mouth and it goes through her body and reaches the eggs. before the egg laying, did you notice what looked like the female 'nibbling' on the male on his underside? the eggs are fertilized before they are lain.

Yeah they made this T shape while the male spasmed lol. I'm left to one egg now. They all popped or something :( It literally looks the way it sounds. There is a gelatin residue left of what was an egg on my glass.

that residue is simply the part of the egg that your fish couldn't eat off the glass. when my cories spawn (like my bronze ones were doing tonight, lol), the barbs in the tank go bonkers for their egg snacks. they literally follow the female cory around until she lays eggs and gobble them up almost as fast as she deposits them on the glass or plants.

Every egg my Corys laid has been white and I have multiple babys. Maybe I just didnt see the good eggs.
