I'm saving up for a 100 gallon tank as an upgrade from a 55g. My problem is I want to put it in the same place as my 55g. Yes this will be a problem. I'm assuming My living room will be cluttered for a couple of weeks. I'm thinking of scooting my 55 aside while still stocked and all systems still running and setting the 100 up and get it running and cycled. Should I move alot of the water over to the new one? The crushed coral also? I'm kind of worried because I have a Regal Tang and I know that those things have a hard time during transport to a new tank. It's time to get a new tank though because he's only about 2" long and he won't stay that way forever, but I wouldn't get rid of him for the world. Had him for a couple of months now and been a beautiful addition. What do you all think I should do as far as transferrring? Does my plans sound OK? Thanks

good luck on scooting your 55 it will be heavy! I'd make sure my cycle was over and done with befor you transfer any of your stock into the new tank. I also would use live sand instead of c.c. your live stock will really thank you. It will help with your amonina, nitrate, and nitrite just move a cup or so over to seed the live sand bed with. As to the tang you'll probably want someone more experienced to answer that one for you but, if the water chemistry in the new systems are identical he should be ok. This might take a while so be patient.
good luck

Would I be able to run a bottom filter with sand? What about vacuuming with a tube? Would the sand get sucked in if using a regular vacuum? Thanks

I did something similar a while back. I had a 40 long that was up and running and I decided to put a 72 in its place. I ended up building a temporary stand out of spare 2x4s and plywood that was the same height as what it was on. I then scooted it on to the temp stand. However, after I got it moved over I decided to buy a stand. All the work for nothing.

Guess this didn't help you at all...but it can be done!

I'm not sure what you mean by bottom filter. My sand never goes to far up my aqua vac and you'll probably find you don't need to use it much anyway. I'm not sure what kind of set up your planning but I have enough critters living in my sand to keep it very clean. I'd also add a some live rock, it won't do anything but help.
hope this helps

Sounds good. Thanks One more thing. How strong of powerhead should I use in a 100 gallon? How many GPH should it put out for a reef tank? Thanks

what kind of tank are you planning on setting up? At the least I'd want something that would turn my water over at least 3 or 4 times an hour. Again it's really going to depend on what all you're trying to keep. Really though with most stuff the more the better. I mean you obviously don't want anything stuck to the other wall of the tank I'd also stick to some of the better brands as well cause well you get what you pay for. I had a rio a couple of years ago and thought wow I save $45. Wrong it cost me more like $450 in dead fish when it blew oil all over the tank.
