I have a BN that is about 2.5 inches and has some bristles on the end of the snout. Does this mean that it is definately male? I have heard that females sometimes grow them. Also, is it just males that have the spines on their gill plates?
Thanks in advance :)

some females will show bristles on the end of the nose..the males usually have distinct bristles(tho this may vary a bit among the ancistrus)
i vhave some females that have fine bristles and some that are smooth on the end of their snouts.

Thanks :) do you have any idea if it's just the males who have the spines on their gill plates?

Both males and females have the spines near their gills they can puff out in defense. my female has no bristles but I know they sometimes can. The males are much fuller. You'll know here soon if the bristles keep coming that it's a male.

Bristles are growing very quickly but it's hard to see if they are just on the very end of the snout. Thanks guys

Chances are very good it's a male of you're seeing definite bristles at 2.5". Females don't usually develop them as quickly and they're always much smaller, more like stubble than bristles.

Is there a good way to sex a BN before it starts to "grow-up"? I want to get a female for my male (he has huge bristles, I am sure he is male) -- but I don't want to end up with 2 males....

I can hook you up with a young adult female, I have some regular browns that have grown large enough to sex now. Shipped Priority Mail total would be around $13.

With adult BN's Males obviously have the impressive set of bristles and most females have lil to none but there are exceptions to every rule. In a case of both male and female having bristles only males get them going in the middle of there snout headed to the middle of there eyes and females only get them on the rim of there snout. But for the common BN's that most people own females rarely get bristles and if they do they are like stated above more like stubble
