What do you think that the best sandy substrate is for cories? I need it in black and don't want to damage the barbels of the fish. I was looking at Tahitian Moon Sand but I'm not clear if that is just for reefs or if it is okay for freshwater too. I also can't tell if its round or jagged. :1zhelp:

tahitian moon sand is fine. I am planning to use colorquartz sand (its ceramic coated) You can find it at pool supply or industrial supply places. colorquartz is no longer being marketed, but it is replaced with some other brand.
I think most barbel issues that people end up getting are due to other problems rather than the sharpness of the substrate.

The only sand that isn't sharp that I'm aware of is oolitic aragonite and I wouldn't want the limestone for Corys. Other sands are nmade by crushing rock whick leaves sharp edges.

floruish sand looks better then the moonsand. some kind of small quartz is also a grand idea.

colorquartz (and similar) sands are coated in ceramic and are very smooth to the touch, and also sink quickly. It also gives you several color options, the hard part is finding a supplier.

A cheaper option is to locate this stuff is through a local industrial supply company or pool supply store, it would save on shipping anyhow. The price for me to get it locally is around .50/lb

permaquartz is the colorquartz replacement, I believe. What size tank is it for? I have a few bags left ( I think) of the colorquartz and could probably share

lots of quartz options out there i think permaquatz is just another brand from a different company not a replacement.

I heard that spectraquartz replaced it in the catalogs, however i've also read that spectra is not ceramic coated. IDK =/
