someone is interested in trading me a couple of discus for a couple of my L046's. I want some discus badly but I dont know much about telling what is good stock etc. Can you guys please check these pics out and make sure they arent stunted etc.

IT IS A PROVEN BREEDING PAIR.. and he says that are A+ quality discus. if anyone sees any reason why that isnt the case please let me know
im not questioning it.. they look nice to me I am just no pro so I would like a pro to tell me lol

I've never kept discus but have seen many and they look very good. Fins look well and if they are breeding then they must be healthy and happy :)
 
The other question is would it be OK to put the proven pair in there and then also either keep some juvies when they have the next batch and let them grow out in there OR buy a few more smaller discus from another source and let them grow out in there as well?

how many discus (uncluding these guys) could I house in a 75g?
id like them to breed a bit on their own and such but I am not getting them with the intent of starting a breeding operation or anything
 
Umm if the juvies still require raising the parents might not spawn because they are looking after the juvies. But you could definitely keep the pair and some juvies in a 75. Just keep up the water changes as they need quite pristine water. But read up on them (you may already have) before you get some.

Of course.. im not new to fishkeeping by any means (I breed L046 zebra plecs). I am just new to discus. I have done quite a bit of research as I always do before i take on a new endeavor... but I also like to get the opinions of AC members on most things as they tend to be a lot more accurate that what is out there in print IME.

just keep the water high temp.. sponge filter although ugly work awesome.. premium food and ample water changes are a must.. beware once you go discus, everything else seems boring.. welcome to being hooked.... ps those fish look REAL nice.. GL/HF
 
As far as can be told by the pics they look pretty nice. They're certainly not stunted, as their eyes would be much larger in proportion to their bodies if that were the case. They have nice conformation from what I can tell. Not sure about in your market, but I'd sell a pair like that for at least $300 in a retail situation. I can't determine their actual size, but if they're over 6" it would be more like $400.
 
I would think it would be much easier to raise the young in a seperate tank.
When I was growing out mine, I was feeding every couple of hours until they were nearly adult sized. The adults I feed 4x a day. Its much easier to maintain a bare growout tank for hte juvies (as well as monitor their health/growth/etc) if they are in a smaller tank.

Not only that, but the bigger discus can outcompete the younger ones for food, your juvies may not get all the nutrition they need if left with several larger ones.

I did grow mine out in a 75g. It was a total labor of love. If I had it to do over, I would have used a smaller tank, no substrate, maybe a couple potted plants.
 
Agree with msjinkzd. I would NOT mix juvies and adults. I agree with sub that the conformation and overall shape look good. I wouldn't put more than 6 adults in a 75, and that would require unswerving attention to water quality. Keep the temp on adults at 82 to 84F. Grow your juvies out in a separate bare bottom as it's much easier to clean after multiple feedings, 84 to 86F. Daily or every other day large water changes and plenty of good food should allow the juvies to grow quickly. Once they reach 4.5 to 5" then I'd add them with the adult pair.
