View Full Version : Something wrong with albino cory?

Ok, so i was comparing my new albino corys to my old albino cory, and A)they are not the same species, B)the old one is injured, or C)something is wrong with old one.

The new ones are very active fish, swimming up and down the tank walls and all over the tank. They also have longer fins and noticeable barbels around their mouths. They are a pale ghostly wight in color.

The old one is active, but he stays on the bottom of the tank. He lacks barbels entirely, and his tail-fin is tiny, as is his dorsal fin. He also seems to be laking the hind fins on the bottom, and his pectoral fins are just little stubs with no actual fin. He is also much redder then the new corys.

Anyone have any idea what could be wrong with him? I can't get pics, even this little fella can't stay still long enuff for that. plz help me, i want to do whats best for my fish, so if he is sick i want to help it.

Substrate it sand, and tank-mates are 7 mollies, 4 black skirt tetras, and 1 albino skirt tetra. Also a ghost shrimp. Ornaments are several pieces of driftwood, some medium-small rocks and some live plants. There used to be fake plants in there, but i took them out. Tank is 30gallons, tall, with a very big filter, and then another smaller filter.

once again, i ask that you plz plz help me, i don't want my little cory to be unhealthy or to die, and will do whatever it takes to bring him back to health, even if it means giving him away.

Pretty simple what's wrong with him...living in poor quality water for a long time. Barbels and fins have eroded, red body could be a sign of septicemia. How frequent are your water changes? The new cories sound like they look like cories should. Good quality water should help him, though his barbels and fins may not grow back entirely. Increase the frequency of water changes, along with the percent changed, just make sure you match temps and have dechlorinator on hand.

sounds like your old cory has been subjected to dirty tank conditions. the barbels being gone and the fins being short or stubs says to me that he has been hanging out on a dirty substrate and bacteria has eaten away at those parts. the pink of his body could be from the same cause.

i would suggest daily large water changes to keep the water pristine and keep the substrate free of mulm and other debris. do this for a week or so and see if his condition improves.

how long have you had the old cory? has he been in this same tank the whole time? what is your water change/maintenance schedule?

Not as frequent as they should be, apparently. So, step up the WCs and he should get better? I will do my best. Now to get that bucket...

I have had the old cory for around a year now. He has been in this tank the whole time.

My water change schedule: 20% WC every week. Now that i have a siphon this should be much easier. I think it will go up to 30-40% maybe even 50% if i think thats necessary.

Thanks for the help, both of you.

be sure to stir up small sections of your sand when doing water changes, to get the mulm up into the water column and sucked out via your siphon.

HOLY grap dude... This is your tank, I think you ought to be less concerned with your sisters fish and work on yours.

I believe i have addressed that issue, but i will clarify again.

That is a 20 gallon tank that only looks like a piece of **** because those pics were from last week, before i got the siphon. They were also in a time of considerable chaos for them, as i had just moved the fish from 1 tank to another, upping the size from 10 gallons to 20 gallons. The 30 gallon tank has no fake or manmade things within it, unless you count the filter and air-stone. On top of that, it hasn't had the greatest filter in a long time, i need to count up my dollars and get another filter or a better filter for that tank.

It wasnt my point, but how long was the cory in there like that? It might be cleaned now (which is GREAT) but serious thought has to go into setting up a ideal living condition before one just runs to the store and grabs random fish.

To long. I hope to prevent something like that from happening ever again, and now have both the ability and the knowledge to do this, before I grew a brain i didn't think it was necessary (dead wrong on that, i know).

Here are some updated pics of the 30gal the 20gal. 30gal has already had its 50% WC, the 20gal is next. The goldfish will wait till my sister gets home before i do any water changes with them. Other that that, I intend for the tanks to stay as clean as they are right now, and just as healthy too.

Those tanks need a scrubbing! If those are new pics I pray for your fish's health. IMO - They border on neglect.
