Of course, get your standard "premium flakes" for tropical fish, but also get some other foods like freeze dried foods, and stuff like that. Variety is key. Choose lots of different well respected brands that vary in what their nutritional value is. Of course, foods that dont hold much nut. value probably should be avoided, but you get the idea.

If you buy colour enhancing flakes, don't be alarmed if your filter media turns red. It is however a hint you may be overfeeding :>

I would suggest:
a good quality flake,
Hikari's Frozen Bloodworms
a good sinking shrimp pellet
wardley's algae wafers
and some frozen baby krill that you'd chop up before feeding.
With those, you'd have a great start - and there's always room to add more things with time:)

Along with what everyone has said, I also like to occasionally feed freeze-dried krill and white shrimp, both of which are a great source of protein.

Get some Tetra Color Bits! Fish love it - and it just may enhance the fishes colors too..

Gourmais like fresh greens. I occasionally blanch and chop up fine bits of spinach. This is probably their favorite food and devour it in no time flat.

Just thought I'd mention that I personally would not feed my fish every other day or every third day. In the wild, fish eat many small meals throughout the day (unless its a big predatory fish...but I don't think you're referring to these). I suggest a small feeding once or twice a day. You can then skip one weekend day (even two I suppose) as a fast to clean the fish out...internally speaking. While they can survive fine on feedings that are so infrequent, I think its best to work with their natural instincts and feed small meals once or twice a day:)

Yeah I (too) like feeding my fish more often, at little amounts. My time allows for once a day, but certainly I wouldn't skip a day unless on vacation. JMO.
