On of these days I will be setting up a community tank, planted, with small schooling fish and some of my Ancistrus, but in the meantime I have 3 tanks (a 40 gallon breeder, a 20 gallon long and a 15 gallon tub) that have become over stocked with ramshorn snails. Way too many snails for me to pick out and feed to other fish, I can't keep up with them. I give some of my other fish a few as a treat once in awhile, the snails came in as hitchhikers originally.
I want to get some SMALL loaches for the community tank but want them temporarily in the "snail tanks" to aid in the population problem.
Soooo - what one to get? I have been looking at the Yunnanilus cruciatus and brevis as well as the Kuhli (? my pH is 7.6) but are they really snail eaters? Will they be OK with a couple of juvie Ancistrus in the 20 and a breeding group of Ancistrus with fry (all the time!) in the 40 breeder?
And will they dessimate the RCS shrimp population that is also in the 20 gallon long? (I'm guessing yes on that one).
Any help, suggestions on a type of (small) loach that will work, or tell me I totally have the wrong idea :hitting: is appreciated!

My kuhlis don't eat snails & I'd be surprised if yunnanilus do either. Botia type loaches like sidthimunki & striata stay small & eat snails. The trouble with that is they'll likely eat shrimp too, at least small ones. In my tank with those loaches there are still snails that get into the filters & prefilters, just not in the tank itself.

If you only want snail control & not a cute bunch of loaches maybe an assassin snail or 3 would be better if you can't keep them trapped, squished or otherwise controlled. My pond snail/RCS tank doesn't get too out of control with reduced feeding.

I do want the group of the loaches for the community tank in the future so I will go with the assasin snails until the new tank is ready for them. I've read that the 2 types you have are not very friendly to tank mates especially any with long fins - has that been your experience as well?
