My oscar reacts to me walking into the room and can apparently differentiate between me and other people, but when I look through the side out the front of the tank(or vice-versa), all I see is the contents of the tank reflected back. Is it the angle I'm looking out at or his eyes or what? I don't get it.

I would think that they see the whole room. If you look at a tank with no background you can see right through it. The reflection comes from the angle you are looking at it.

So if I shave my head and rinse it with cold water and put on my swim goggles and stick my head in the tank I should experience the same thing?

hmmm...interesting. I would think that while they might have a whole view of the room they are in, their sight might be slightly worse off than ours. I mean, in the wild they dont need crisp vision as many times fish aren't in "clear" water. Actually, some fish have very poor vision, and it varies depending on which species we are talking about, unlike humans which are almost always born with the same eye sight.
...So maybe they can see the room, but it's blurry.

BTW, awesome avatar! Is your oscar trained?
I could proabably do that with my 240 gal(when its done setting up), since i can practically fit myself inside it and still have lot of room left. I probably could even swim with my fish LoL.:D , but then that would be a lot of water displacement and could overflow the tank.

The divers who go down into the big aquariums.... like Ripley's, or a state aquarium..... can see out depending on the light. If the light is on in the tank and out in the room I think it limits their view..... like looking out your house window at night with the lights on inside.
