How come some have a kind of stripe along the front half of their bodies, while others are a solid color except for the spots?

simple variation? perhaps, there could be several subspecies. for the most part, spiny eels don't seem to be too well defined into the taxonomy...at least in the sphere of the general fishkeeper! it's tough enough sometimes to get it down past what genus a fish is...
my bet is on the variation though...probably just a trait that pops up with certain fish...compare it, perhaps, to the coloration of the 3spot gouramis (blue, gold, opaline, etc).
