What is the optimal lighting for a planted 55g tank? I know about the aquatic forum, but this is a new hat for me! Thanks!

Well, being 4' long, you can use shop lights over a 55g. That's the cheapest route and 2 double fixtures would probably get you around 160w for just over 3 wpg.
From what I have read/heard, power compact flourescents are more powerful than regular fluorescents and better at cutting through the depth of the water. You can get a 2x55w PC kit from AH Supply (http://www.ahsupply.com) . I just dealt with them and would recommend them.
That option would cost more but could retrofit into your existing hood(s) on the 55g.

Thanks, I checked the site. How difficult is it to retrofit the current hoods?

If you're at all handy, about an hour or less. I did it Friday night while watching tv. I used a drill, wire cutters, electrical tape, phillips screwdriver, and an awl (or a nail set).
Really, all you're doing is removing the lighting guts from the existing hood then installing their stuff. It involves stripping and connecting some wires but they give you a good diagram, instructions, and the wire nuts.

Are the finished enclosures advertised on the site worth the money? Thanks for the advice. I will probably go with 2 x 55 set that you recommended. What do you make of the A-ROD deal?

I think they're probably owrth it if you don't have the time/tools/skills to make your own. They're not outrageously priced. Of course you'll still have to buy the lights.

Ain't skeered. I was happy with the team the Sox were bringing into spring training on Friday and I'm still happy. Its a much different trade and situation for the Yankees. I'm not happy about it but I'm not concerned. Bring it on! Less than four days and 4 hours until pitchers and catchers report!
