My favorite fish I've only had for three weeks died. :( I couldn't figure out what had happened. I removed him from the tank and put him in his own because white stuff had started growing out of his fins. I have no idea why. The ammonium in my tank was high and I have been adding stability like they told me at the fish store.

I have a 30 gallon tank and it was in there with three dwarf gouramis, three blue gouramis and one other medium sized angel. :(

It wasn't ich. :( I don't know what it is. Can anybody help me? I don't want my other fish to die and my Dwarf gouramis who I've had for a long time is looking kinda sluggish and he is starting to develop a kinda film over him. That's the best way I can describe it. Please help if you can. I'm going to the pet store today to check out what they think.

Q: The fish's fins appear to be slowly eaten away and edged in white.

A: This is a classic case of Fin and Tail Rot. It is caused by a Pseudomonas Bacteria (A condition called: Pseudomoniasis).
Treatment: There are quite a few things you can use to treat this condition. TMP-Sulfa (http://www.nationalfishpharm.com/shopping2.html#TMP_Sulfa) -or- Sulfa 4 TMP (http://www.nationalfishpharm.com/shopping2.html#Sulfa_4-TMP) -or- Neomycin Sulfate (http://www.nationalfishpharm.com/shopping2.html#Neomycin_Sulfate) -or- Tetracycline (http://www.nationalfishpharm.com/shopping2.html#Tetracycline_Hydrochloride) -or- Nitrofurazone. (http://www.nationalfishpharm.com/products3.html#Nitrofurazone)
Q: My fish have an off-white looking substance growing on the fins.

A: This is a gram-negative bacterial infection called Columnaris Disease. Some people often mistake this disease as a fungus.
Treatment: Sulfa drugs work well for this. TMP-Sulfa (http://www.nationalfishpharm.com/products5.html#TMP_Sulfa) -or- Sulfa 4 TMP (http://www.nationalfishpharm.com/products4.html#Sulfa_4_TMP) -or Triple Sulfa (http://www.nationalfishpharm.com/products5.html#Triple_Sulfa) Powder.
Q: The fins on my fish are all fuzzy and cotton-like. The fins are eaten away.

A: This sounds like a Saprolegnia Fungus.
Treatment: Treat the fish with Forma-Green (http://www.nationalfishpharm.com/shopping.html#Forma-Green) for 5-7 days.

Edit: I hope it is the fresh water angel we are talking about...

I think it was a freshwater angel considering it's tank mates (gouramis).
Wrong forum, but it does sound like a bacterial or fungal infection.

fin rot and bacterial infections can easily set in on the fins when water quality isn't up to par.

when your ammonia is high you need to be doing large volume water changes at least once a day and use a good dechlorinator, such as Prime. Prime will detoxify the ammonia (and nitrite) in the water for 24 hours when dosed at 5x the regular amount.

30 gallons, IMO, is much too small a tank for that stock load. i'd go with at least a 55 gallon if you want to keep all your current fish together. the gouramis may fight with each other as they mature though, and two angels in the same tank (unless they are a breeding pair) may not work in the long run either.

as for your gourami that is developing a film all over, that may be excess slime coat he is producing because the ammonia in the water is irritating him.

Thanks for all the advice! :) was tired of all the problems and put my fish in my old tank which had some baby fish in it and basically took 95% of the water out of the old tank and re-did it. I used stability for a few days and put in some of my guppies from the small tank. The water is much better now and my gourami is looking a little better now. It still has some white stuff on its gills. He might have to be seperated and treated but I'm trying to gauge his needs... not sure if he is having as much problem with the water since the amonium is under control now... :) Thanks again :)
