I found some sand at HD, but it just says sand box sand. It doesn't say what it is made from or anything. Is it safe to use? Will it leach any unwanted chemicals into my system? Is there such a thing as the sand being too fine?

Thanks! :D

a lot of people have used HD playbox silica sand, sand blasting sand, and so on with no problems. if it's made for a play box it is probably pretty clean and pefectly fine for the aquarium.

My biggest problem with that stuff is the color and grain size. I haven't used it, but have seen it used in friends tank, and it's a little too brown for me and clouds up because of the small dusty grain size.

But it's way cheaper than the aragonite I bought, and thats a plus.

Does it cause any additional algae problems?

Nope. I have silica in 4 SW tanks right now, and haven't had any big algae problems, certainly none that could be blamed on the sand.
