Fin rot or nipped fin on Jack Dempsey?

I purchased a Jack Dempsey yesterday and it has a small tear in its tail and fins. Iwas wondering if it was fin rot or if it just got nipped. What are the symptoms of fin rot and do nipped fins heal.

It is unlikely it is finrot, it could be a nipped fin, but I would imagine the fin split between two rays when the fish was netted.

Finrot looks just like it sounds, the fins look like they have gone bad and are deteriorating.

Finrot usually has white clumps on the fins where the tears are,

The fins have little white spots by them, i wouldn't say they are clumps and you pretty much have to look real close to see them. sHOULD I BE WORRIED.Is fin rot contagious to the other fish.
But there is also a bucktoothed tetra in the tank with the dempsey that tries to tank chunks out of the dempsey.
