Does anyone know what type of algae this is, and if so, how does one get rid of it.

Thanks

Compsopogone, a red coenocytic alga.
Called "staghorn algae".

All algae has pretty much the same cure: good CO2(if you use it), lots of plants from the start, prune off and remove what's there, have the CO2 20-30ppm the entire day length, good NO3, PO4, K+, traces, GH.

Weekly large water changes etc. Keep up on nutrients.

When you do pruning, or any disturbance to the tank, always do a water change afterwards. Other wise it's nutrient/CO2 related or you have too many fish in the tank.

It generally needs trimmed off, then correct the poor plant growth issues and it will not grow back.
