I have a five gallon planted tank with eclipse type hood, I have a betta in another tank and would consider another but I want to see if you have any other ideas for the 5 gallon

killiefish? any gouramis small enough? what about dwarf puffers?

willing to consider oddballs as well

I know the work involved with a small tank as I have had it set up with chocolate gouramis before, I jumped into the aquaria hobby deep with those gouramies and they cirtainly chalenged me, unfortunately I put some petrefied wood in the tank after I had them a bit and it leached iron and copper into the water and killed them

so... I am willing to reaserch anything and make it work I just don't want to be to cruel with what I put in such a small space, so no oscars for this 5 gallon:D

Several of the tetra species of fish would prob be fine in a five gallon. Like say 6 neons, cardinals, or black neons maybe.

ya one option would be 6 ember tetras and two pigmy cories... both of those fish are only about an inch each full grown

guess I am wishing for a pint sized oscar:rolleyes:

I also like the black phantom tetras... I would have the ones with red on the fins...

but then again I sorta want personality... you sure there isn't a pygmy oscar?

If it was me I would do dwarf puffers or killiefish. Both would be excellent choices. I personally would do puffers cause I already have a pair of killies.

I've found the killies to be pretty smart and have some personality too.

I am intrigued by the killies, but they always seem to be the fish that some one else has but I have never seen nor know how to get ahold of...

so lets start with what killie do you have? and how did you get yours...

I had thought the dwarf puffer idea would get shot down for such a small tank ie a little to much personality to fit in such a small space

pygmy cories really need to be in larger groups - like of 6 or more - more so than their full size counterparts

Have you considered:
scarlet badis (so pretty) - even regular badis
some of the smaller killifish
shrimp
a dwarf honey gourami would fit
glowlights
Panda tetras stay small? I can't remember lol

you could easily do one betta or dwarf gourami (if its the honey kind, they tend to stay smaller) and like 5-6 pygmy cories:)

black neons get significantly larger than other neons i believe

EDIT: also, cherry barbs, mosquito fish, guppies, and ADFs :D

I had no idea pygmy corries needed that much of thier own company, my wife had a single male in her 3 gallon and he was as chipper as ever and I had a pair in my 20 gallon that actually spawned:p who knew

Liveaquaria.com has a selection of like 4 types of Killifish, some for reasonable prices. I considered getting these, and still plan to when I set up my 10 gallon at work.
