Do the ammonia packs in the aquaclear 500 really help rid ammonia??

I found it helpful during the first few months of a new setup but otherwise I wouldn't buy it again.

Exactly, if your tank is established there is no need for a product which "removes" ammonia because you shouldn't have any ammonia present in your tank(s)... ;)
