While in the process of completing my aquarium room, I have noticed that a whitish material has been growing or attaching to the top and bottom plastic parts and the suction cups of my tank heaters. I can clean them off with a hose but then they float around the tank and I have to use a fine strainer to get it out.

I have three tanks with fish in them and four that only contain fresh water. This is only occurring in the tanks without fish. It appears to be a milky, mucous type of material that I have never seen before.

Any help?

Bill

Also: I would like to attach some digital photos to show off my setup. Can someone tell me how to do this or point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

Hello Bill, welcome to AC! They white stuff is a fungus (if I remember correctly). Don't count on me as a lifeline for this one though. I have had it appear in the past and it is harmless albiet unsightly.
If you click on the search button in the upper right corner and search for "white" or "fungus", you will get quite a few past threads to read and should find your definite answer there.

The only experience I can relay on photos is join an online photo site (like webshots.com) and link to the site (simply say "see photos here" and type in the address "www.somephotosite.com". This site will automatically make that address a click-able link.

Hope This Helps!

Question:

Do you use Stress Coat to condition the water? I bought some recently and used it in one of my tanks. I got the same whitish slime on my submersible heater.

I guessed that it might be the Aloe Vera in the Stress Coat, so I stopped using it, and the slime went away.

Oh, and welcome to AC :) :)

I think the white stuff is fungus, too. I've had it often in new tanks, and it's always gone away on its own. I suspect some of the normal tank inhabitants (microscopic or nearly so) eventually munch on it.

Waterbaby:

No - no stress coat. These are empty tanks (besides the water, filter and heater).

I brought one of the new salt water tanks online yesterday and the material is now gone from that tank.

Thanks all for your help. Also, thanks Beviking for the webshots tip. I'm in the process of uploading the pics and will have a display in a few days.
