Well, I have been thinking about entering the world of salt for awhile and today in the classifieds there is an ad for a 55 gal setup for $350. I was wondering if I could get some input into if this is a good idea or not. I called the guy and this is the info he gave me: It is a 55 gal tank and fake wood stand. 400 Emperor Penguin filter, Sea Clone protein skimmer, has about 20 lb of live rock, powerhead, heater, hoses and chemicals included. According to him this setup is about 4 years old and he no longer has the time or money to deal with it, he is a college student. Any other questions I should ask? I am looking for input on this, I can go see the setup tomorrow. What does everyone think? Is this a good price? Are these good pieces of equipment? Thanks for your thoughts on this.

There is nothing wrong with buying a used setup, but this one seems a little pricey.
That seams a little pricy even in Canadian dollars. Hmmm, is there any light system with it??
I sold a 75 gallon tank, wood cabinet stand, Penguin filter , heater, couple ornaments, gravel. For 200 Canadian. Was a fresh water tank. That was a great deal for that guy I sold it to.

So, what should I try to talk him down to?
He didn't mention lights and I forgot to ask. I will check that out, too.
Well that is a tuff question. Really you should search around and probably you have on new equiptment. In the end it is your decision. Well if he was keeping coral for that time , he likely would have some upgraded lighting system. You know you must weigh in some risks dealing in a used tank, check for scratches, you will have no warrantee. I would put 0 value on the penguin. A lot of people don't even use a filter, sometimes a skimmer. More live rock and some form of water circulation. If the tank is still up and running then you can put some value on that.
Let us know how it goes after you see it. Don't be too hasty.
