aquarium backgrounds

I've been reading all posts on backgrounds and trying to make one for my 400 l tank, however i have a lot of questions, I plan to make it about 2 meters long and 50 cm tall, I'll try to work with styrofoam sheets, canned foam, sand and small rocks. Epoxy paint is very expensive so i'll try to use "cristal resin" do you now if it works ?
How heavy can the complete background can be
Any advice ?

Sounds like work- just slap a coat of paint on and call it a day :D

Seriously- I've seen the sculpted/rock/resin backgrounds and they are indeed lovely. But once the tank inhabitants are in won't they be the primary focus?
