I don't know, as I'm fairly new to SW myself, but I just got one myself about a week ago, and the little guy (so far, and I'm crossing my fingers on this one) is extremely hardy, spunky, and very entertaining to watch. He's got the most personality I think of any fish I've owned so far.
I accidently buried the little guy when I was doing some rearranging of my LR once I got the last bit of it, and didn't realize it. My heart sunk when I was doing a search for him. Then, as I was watching the tank a couple hours later, he comes bursting up through the sand under a rock, just fine.
Sorry to stray from the question, back to the topic; I think he'd be fine if you're CC is fairly fine-grained. I've seen mine pick up mouthfulls of sand that has the odd dead bits of kelp stems, etc. that would seem kind of painful to strain and go through it no problem.
I have an engineer goby and crushed coral. He's still a little guy only about 2 inches at most and he loves the CC he built himself a nifty fort under a hunk of base rock in one corner of the tank and has started construction on an annex dead center in the tank. He is very amusing popping out his head to see what's going on and to rearrange his fort walls.
