This is what I decided to put my tax refund into. Its a 29g tank, w/an Emperor 230 bio-wheel filter. Just put the water in today w/ one live plant, cycling w/added ammonia like I read about. Will be putting in some cichlids once its ready, along w/a loach or two I think. Also going to add the bluestone I quarried to make a couple of caves and such on the right.

That's a fully submersible heater, right? So why not position it horizontally across the bottom of the tank for better heat distribution?

I say a painted black background would be neat. Even so, it looks great.

It looks like a nice start. Like you said already adding more rock structures with caves will be nice for the fish. I prefer a bit more greenery also along with a background. My tendancy is towards darker backgrounds and substrate. If you are like me you can always add some stuff as you go. That is every payday for a while I added 2 or 3 fake plants to the tank until I got to a point I was fairly satisfied with. Still debating with myself about getting real plants.

I agree about placing the heater in a horizontal position at the back of the tank. Also about the darker background. I don't currently have a background but plan on buying one soon.
