how can I tell the plants condition?

I am taking my first try at a planted tank and I was wondering how can I tell if the plants are thriving or dieing? Should I be able to tell the difference after a week if they aren't doing good? I'm going to be starting a DIY co2 injector hopefully tonight (if I can find the last part I want/need).

The plants you have will hold their color and start to grow within a few days. If they start to decay, lose color, shed leaves etc. you may have a problem with them.
I say you may because newly acquired plants, at times tend not to take right off and show signs of poor health and then start to grow. A lot depends on the conditions that they were grown under.
