Wow not the prettiest of sights. I really would have hated to see what it would have looked like if you didn't wash the sand first. I'm just curious if you have a filter going or are you just letting things settle first to save you the pain of cleaning that stuff out of your filter? I really don't know how long that is going to take to settle, but I'd be more worried about having that cloud come back when you do a water change.

hmmm...a 25% water change every second day for a week should clear it up. Sand is always messy. Seems like no matter how much you wash it, there's always alot of dust...

Think a bacterial bloom might be part of the problem?

I've used home depot play sand in all my tanks, including my 38g which I didn't even rinse the sand out. I've never had a reoccuring cloud in any of my tanks but I am careful not to blow sand everywhere either.

You can prevent things from happening anyway by sticking the end of your tube to refill the tank into a water bottle. If you use a bucket, find a smaller container, like a gallon jug and pouring it onto your hand while you cup your slightly.

it's alot better now .
i used home depot play sand, and my wife spent about 2 hours washing it.i had the filter running for the night, changed about 10 gallons of the water today to get rid of the scum, and it's about 90% now.
i had to get the sand down fast cause all my fish were in a bucket on the floor, and the were getting colder, and i had 2 jump out around the tinfoil(i caught them in time).
by 2 in the morning it looked like about 30%better, so i had to stick the fish in.this morning was better still.and now it's cool.

and the only fish of any size for now.
the tank is 4 cory's, 1 otto, 1 dwarf gourmai, and 16 teen guppies, and 13 babies.
i stuck a couple of airstones in for now to help move the sand scum around, they'll be out in a day or 2, and my kids can have their ship working again.lol
