ok , i need you guys to come up big for me here!!!
i have 4 rainbow fish 2 hatchet fish and 2 angels that have been in quarantine for a while now roughly almost 3 months - they were in a 20G and battled ick a lot - the rainbows gotslight mouth fungus too - but it was hard to treat cause the ick kept coming back - so eventually i completly emptied the tank and got rid of the gravel and ich has not come back - however the 20g was getting to be a bit much to manage for a q tank with frequent water changes n the fact that it's in my kitchen - so i got a 10g - now i know the tank is overstocked but hopefully it is only temporary!!!
the mouth fungus appears to be gone finally! i've been using melafix and still am as pre cautionary -these fish have had it so rough and so many different out breaks of stuff i wonder isit safe to ever put them in my 55? i assume once healthy and they comlplete say 6-7 weels of normal healthy q they are ok to move?
or are they carrying nasties that they are now just immune tothat will hurt my healthy tank?
my thought is that as long as they are ok in a month n a half then i can move them cause if it was serious illness it woul spread to all fish in the q tank n not be curable - only one of the rainbows ever showed mouth fungus -
sorry i know this was long
help!!! thanks lmb

Its hard to say. I know exactly what you mean, though. My boesmani developed mouth fungus awhile ago. So i treated him until it was "gone" (he stayed in qtine until a couple weeks after visible signs disapperead) and then he went back in the main tank. Well, a week or so later, it was back - I assume it was nevery fully gone to begin with.

So, he's being treated again. I'm going to wait until all visible signs are gone and treat a little bit past that point. Then, I'll keep him in there w/o meds for about a month. If all goes well, he'll be back in.

I'd say that after they pass a month or more without recurring symptoms - with NO meds (to be sure it is actually gone and not just "hiding" because of the meds) - that they should be fine.

Mouth fungus is a nasty thing to get:mad: :shake:

yeah i think i got a minor case of it cause i was always able to keep it under control some what it was just with the combo of ich ui coulnt fully combat it because the two thrive in opposite temps for ex - when i treated the ich i raised the temp which the fungus likes - so it was tough - but now that we're ich free i think i've got a good battle against the fungus goin - it never got to more than just a little cotton tuft on his lip - it never progressed and took over his whole mouth thank fully :)

you could take a test fish from the main tank and put it into the Q tank to see if it gets sick.

Well, I've never used meds before. I have tried sea salt and it works wonders. The best med in my opinion for different conditions. I have used it in a planted tank and it worked great. I treated ich, but I've read it's excellent for many conditions, fungus, you name it. I would treat the main tank. I have recently treated my friends oscars with it as they have been moved and went through a lot. Needless to say, the salt is aiding their recovery.

Some fish will take the salt better than others. I have lost some fish from the outbreak but I am not sure if I have treated them too late or whether from the salt. One clown loach was completely covered in white spots and lost loooots of weight. Needles to say, he has recovered nicely and gained most of his weight back and shows beautiful colors. Some cardinals died and some survived.

I think the key is to treat early. In the past I have used 1tbl spoon per 10g and it seems to work. Increasing temperature gradually seems to help as well while treating. When you use salt, don't change the water for the time of treatment, but if must, you have to replenish. Usually a treatment will last abot a week. Then, through partial water changes you get rid of salt.

Hope this helps.
