Rare Cichlids

I have spent most of my time and money so far in obtaining the fish in my collection. But now I am hopeing to focus on decoration and tank design. I have some ideas for my aquariums, but would like to view pictures (galleries if possible) of beautifully decorated aquariums. Cichlid and other large fish aquariums would be prefered, because these are the kinds of fish I keep. But anything nice would be appreciated.

Thank You

You'll want to check out the entries of this years aquatic gardeners aquascaping contest if you want to see some beautiful planted aquariums. It would be difficult to keep many of these plants with larger cichlids.

Thanks for the encouragement! All the months of research and planning I did on my other 40 Gal. tank, and this one looks better! Go figure, oh well, I'm going to remake my 40 Gal. and hopefully it will soon be just as nice :D

I don't keep the larger fish as you but I do have a few small rift lake cichlid setups and planted communities at http://members.fishprofiles.com/files/~jafo/

I have quite a few pics so it is kinda slow for dialup. My apologies for that but I didn't want to do 20 pages.

Cichlid and plants don't go together very well. I would try Java Moss on driftwood w/ black gravel.
Here is a picture of my 65 Datnioid plant tank. The largest fish is 6" w/ a total of 9 fish all together. The tank set-up is about 7 month old.

The list of fish in my pictures are:

Coius microlepis aka. Datnioides microlepis, Siamese tiger fish.
There are about 5 different spieces. The ones picture are Indo tigers and Thin Bar Siamese tiger. Max size 14-24"
The spotted one in the left to top middle is Ctenopoma acutirostre aka. Spotted climbing perch, Leopard Ctenopoma, Spotted Ctenopoma, Bushfish. Max size 6-8"
Left 2nd to top corner is Monocirrhus polyacanthus aka. Leaf Fish.
Everything else is pretty common.

I've seen Ken's tank in person .. it is very sharp.

As for Cichlid setups ... here are some pictures from our members over at http://www.african.uklinux.net/phpBB/index.php

The actual pictures can be viewed here: http://community.webshots.com/album/53941140OwUGFP

Some pretty sharp Rift Lake setups. ;)

Ken91gsxCichlid and plants don't go together very well.

with that, comes my rocky setup for my oscar. it's exactly the same as the 15gal that my Oscar used to stay in.

http://www.briancyc.com/aquaria/images/4fttank.jpg

now he's got the same design, but a 65gal tank. though it's a simple design, it's really enjoyable to see the inhabitants enjoying the tank.

btw whatever your tank setup is like, make sure you and your fish like it (and enjoy it).

also do remember that sometimes the grass looks greener on the other side. :p

hopefully one day i'll be able to design tanks that look like how you people did it.

Thanks for replying everyone.

Fishiebusiness, those tanks are very nice. But nearly everyone is heavily planted. So many delicate plants wouldn't last 5 minutes with my fish. But I'm glad you posted the link. I really liked the single Malawi setup. Very nice. And the "Judges"(?) that posted comments at the bottom of each page......., the one in the middle was hillarious because He was always like "The drift wood should be more off center, the plants should be more terraced, and your amazons are so big they distract from the rest of the tank!", while the the other 2 were nearly always like "WOW! Amazing aquascapeing. I've never seen Amazons so big! Keep up the good work!"

Ken91gsx, your tanks are very attractive to me. I love your fish to. But again so many nice plants wouldn't last with a couple of 12" Midas or such,......their just like bull dozers. But I did get some ideas from your tanks.

Thanks again everyone.
