I'm 4 days into my aquarist life. In my 20g tank (well planted with real plants) I have 12 neon tetras, 3 small sucking catfish and a Siamese fighting fish. Water stuff is: pH 7, GH 6, Ammonia .5ppm and nitrites 0.
My Siamese Fighting fish wasn't eating, so I bought some Wardleys betta floating pellets. Apart from watching the Tetras try to eat them as they float upwards (I call that game Tetra Tennis), he doesn't seem to eat many. Some of the remaining ones have turning into balls covered in a fungus which looks like cotton. They float around the tank. I've removed a few of them, believe me it's not like the whole tank is full of them, just about 4 - 5.
Is this normal? Do I need to worry or will they sort themselves out? Because of the high Ammonia levels I've witheld feeding today.
Also, if I put Ammo-Lock into the water to counteract the high ammonia, because the water is already de-chlorinated, could I overdose on the de-chlorinating chemicals.
I'm trying to limit the chemicals I add, just Aqua-Plus and a tropical fish water conditioner is all I've add so far.
regards,
Special K
