I was wondering if anyone knows if these have a dormancy period. My tank was dry for about a year, then I started it up again. It's moderately planted, and I haven't added any plants for about 2 months. Before I went to my parents for Christmas, there was no sign of them. When I got home, all of a sudden they have reappeared. they were in the tank before, so I was just wondering if it's possible that some of the snails in the tank went dormant, then suddenly became active. Sorry if this is a confusing post, but just wondering if anyone knew.
Any snail with an operculum can withstand some period of drying, they just close the trap door and wait for the return of water. The time period of drought they can withstand is variable and not very predictable.

A year is an awful long parching, though. My hunch is that minute ones came in with the plants from another tank. Have you noticed the new-born Melania at the water surface? They are small!

I have seen substrate in a bag that was dry for close to 6 months get put in a tank and while doing a fishless cycle MTS's appeared.
So I can vouch for 6 months.
