I was thinking of doing a black background and need some ideas or suggestions....on how to do it and what it looks like. Can any of you help? Thank you.
Here are some pics of my tank with a black painted background.
There is really nothing to it.. If you paint it you really only have to decided if you want to use acrylic or oil based paint. Acrylic is easily removed with water which may or may not be what you are looking for. You can also apply some sort paper background. Some sort of oil (such as cooking oil) placed between the paper and glass will help hold it.
Acrylic is waterbased, so clean up is easy and there are no solvents, no fumes, BUT once acrylic is dry it is not water soluble It basically becomes a sheet of plastic. It's relatively easy to scrape/peel off if you want to get rid of it later, but it is waterproof once dry. I just, for instance, finished my hood with an acrylic "varnish".
For my 125 gal tank I glued a small square of velcro to the 4 corners of the outside of the back glass, and one more small square halfway along the upper back edge. I bought some cheap black cloth, measured it, had my wife hem it and sew the oppposite type of velcro patches at the corners and middle top edge, and simply hung it up on the tank.
Looks great.
