Hi all. I got some nice hitchhikers with some rocks my friends gave me. It has a nice anemone (dont know which) but i can get pics up shortly, as well as a bunch of feather dusters, and mushroom looking anemones as well. My friend also gave me a clam.

My question is, what do these guys eat? They have been in there for like 3 days now, any light can be shined on me here? is there any specific food or liquids that should be put in for them to munch on? thanks!

Most anemones can eat a variety of meaty food like clams or silversides. The size of the food depends on the size of the anoemone.

I have a rock or flower anemone and a condy.I feed them both little chunks of shrimp and they are doing great.I also treat them once a week to a little shot of live black worms from the turkey baster, they really respond to the quickness to these live treats.

the shrooms and featherdusters are filter feeeders ,and the anemone will get some of it's food through filter feeding as well. The anemone and the shroom both need pretty good lighting to make it as well. Both of these to critters harbor photosynthetic algae that help them get sugars and remove wastes from their bodies so good lighting and very good water quality is 100% needed for the anemone.

p.s. most anemonies are VERY hard to keep even the hardier ones take a lot of attention to detail and a very well established tank. Not trying to gripe at you but, if you don't have these conditions I'd take it back.

Your filter feeders (i.e. feather dusters etc.) will appreciate some phytoplankton. I use DT's which is an aqueous suspension of about four different sizes/species. It's sold refrigerated and I've never had any go bad on me before I used it all. My sponge colony is thriving on the stuff.

awesome, where did you buy it from? an online store maybe i can check it out? i saw some at an online store that i linked off of reefcentral.com for 20 dollars a 16oz, and at my local pet store a 3.5oz was 20 bucks!!! when you feed them do you put it near them? or do you just drop it in the water and let it mix in ?????

THANKS!

I buy mine from my LFS at about a dollar an ounce (better price on the larger bottles.) I add an ounce every other day to my 125 reef-in-progress in an area of strong water movement. The label says that most protein skimmers do not remove a significant quantity of live phytoplankton, but I usually turn off the air to my skimmer overnight after adding plankton.

Awesome! thanks i picked up my 7.5oz bottle at another LFS for 15.00. not too bad, bt now that i see you pay 1 dollar per oz is pretty good! I left my protein skimmer on last night after i fed them, but i did notice how happy the feather duster, anemone, mushroom, and clam reacted. they all seemed kind of happy an hour later. Maybe im just paranoid. Thanks again!!

P.S. I also picked up some froze brine shrimp for my fish/anemone.
