Quick question i have some java ferns im looking to anchor but i am only running a 10g are the coconut shells too big?

No, I don't think so.

Another idea is to glue them to a ceramic ring and then push the ceramic ring into the substrate. As logn as you don't bury the rhizome (the finger like structure that the roots and leaves grow out of) they will do just fine.

gel super glue is the easiest. Reefers use it to hook frags. I have used it directly in the tank, or put it in thetank not fully cured. Totally invert and fish safe
