Hi all I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to quiet down a little Giant pump? I have a 142 gallon setup and the pump, sump skimmer is all in a cabinet under the tank. The noise is driving my wife nuts and I must admit it bothers me also. We lined the cabinet doors with bed egg crates ( foam material you use to make a bed more comfortable). The hum of the pump has died down but not to acceptable levels yet. Any ideas?
Thanks Adam

Is the pump itself noisy, or it it vibrating against something? It might help to put it on something soft. I haven't used little giant pumps in decades, but most water pumps are rather quiet.

its a pretty good hum but i am going to put some foam under the pump to see if that will help also. My goal isnt to get it 100% quiet but rather a little less annoying. Thanks for the reply, its very comforting knowing there is help out there that isnt a lfs. I like my lfs but the bottom line is they are out to make money.

Hello,

If you haven't solved your pump noise problem with the foam then, I would definetely contact either the store or the manufacturer, or both. Just about all of the pumps out there on the market should run relatively silent. A dull vibration should be expected but, if it sounds like your running a diesel engine then there is definetely a problem.

I had a problem with the noise from one of my rio pumps. I've since replaced it with another brand. It was a used pump so, I guess you get what you pay for. Anyway, good luck.

Car audio shops (the ones with the BIG speakers), or online stores should have more effective sound deadening material like Dynamat if you need to go that route ... though, for all I know it could end up being more expensive than getting a new pump ... but its always an option.

Thanks for the reply, this was the kinda info i was looking for when i posted. Thanks for the out of the box reply, i will let you know how expensive the stuff is. Honestly, at this point we really dont hear the pump noise much.
