Just wanted to share my first successful batch of these guys. I believe they are batch #4. None of the previous batches survived past about 2-3 weeks. The only thing I did different this time, was leave one of their lights on round the clock so that the parents could constantly guard their babies. It worked. These guys are 2 months old and there are 19 of them. :)

Awwwww, how cute, I want some! I found out the same trick for keeping my other fish from eating my gudgeon eggs. I left the light on.

Not actually a gundgeon breeder--I just happened to have male & female purple spotted gudgeons (Mogurnda mogurnda) that were in love.

NO FAIR! :D
What conditions did they end up spawning in and were you able to tell they were male and female? I've got 3 of them. If there's a chance I can breed them, I would like to try. They all look relatively the same to me. Can you give me specs. such as pH, were they in brackish, if so, what salinity, etc.?

The male was more colorful & smaller, the female was huge compared to him. They were in a very busy community 90g tank. Actually, I'd have to leave the lights on, so the rainbowfish wouldn't eat all the eggs. I think I read somewhere that beefing them up with bugs/crickets put them into breeding condition. Also the 50% weekly water changes keeps them in prime condition too. These are FW fish. PH in that tank runs around 7.8. I only have one adult male left from the fry, he ate all his brothers & sisters. The parents died from being boiled from a heater malfunction. :sad Mom & Dad cleaned off the glass & Dad would fan the eggs & ward off any intruders. The rainbows would eat the eggs from below. I thought there would be a better survival rate if I left him to fan the eggs as close to hatching time as I could (there were several hundred). Then I'd scrape them off & put them in a seperate tank to hatch. I believe it was about 5 days from laying to hatching. I started feeding the tiny specks of fry with Liquifry.

Here's my 2 originals: Bitey & Fatty. Bitey recently passed away, to unknown causes.

You can also see another pic of one of them (can't remember if it's Bitey or Fatty) in the fish profiles on this site. :)

That's what I think. From your description and another I found on-line, I'm pretty sure they were both females, too. I think my 2 small ones that I am currently growing out might be a male & female. The one is much smaller and has a different shaped vent from what I can see (he likes to hide in the plants all day, can't get a definite look at him). There's one left at the pet store, may be another female though. Will have to sex it when I go to work tomorrow.
