View Full Version : Gotta question about my flame gourami.
Yesterday I bought a beautiful flame gourami and put him in my newly cycled tank. At the fish store, all of the flame gourami were so active, but now that mine is all alone, he seems to be sulking in the corner behind one of the tank decorations...I know he's de-stressing and has to get used to his new environment but I'm still worried that he might need a friend of his own kind...I've read contradictory info about male gourami and whether or not they should be kept in 2's or not...What do ya'll think? After he settles in for a week or so, should I add another one? Thanks so much!!

I have had two red honey gouramis for about a week now and they are very active. They fight with their "feelers" (not sure of the proper name) and chase each other some but don't seem to hurt one another at all. They are always on the move and they use all levels of the tank.
When they sleep or when they are stressed they tend to just lay near the bottom, so that's probably what you're seeing. He's likely just recuperating from the stress of being in a new environment.
One of mine fell onto the floor while I was trying to get them in the tank, and he was obviously stressed, just laying in one spot and not exploring like the other one. After a few hours he was doing fine though, and he's almost as active as the other one now except a bit more shy.
I don't think adding another male would hurt. Mine seem pretty content together, at least so far.

we had 4 dwarf's in a 10 gallon tank but they never really socialized, prettymuch stayed in their own spots. what size tank do you have? Does it have lots of cover and hiding spots? dwarf gourami's are rather shy, at least the ones we've had. If you have other fish in the tank (not necessarily other gourami's), they're more likely to feel comfortable. We put one in our 55 gallon community tank and he'd swim around with mollies most the time. most of the time though, they have their own territory and stay put. Kyle
I've got a 10g tank...It has 3 neon tetras that I adopted about 6 months ago and the new flame gourami...I just want to make sure that the gourami isn't lonely...If I do add another dwarf gourami does it have to be a flame?? I was just wondering if a flame will get along better with another flame or with a powder blue, etc...
Thanks again!!

I would stick with the one and add more neons to form a bigger school or else add some bottom fish liek cories or khulie loaches. My dwarf gourami gets excited soemtimes, sulks sometimes and hides quite often. They are funny fish.
