can velvet be treated with only high temperature?
i'm suspecting a case of velvet in my angelfish tank right now. because i have been treating my tank for more than 2 weeks now with malachite green , thought it was ich at 1st...
but the dots are finer,.... like sand..
normally when its ich... malachite gren should have gotten rid of it in about 3 days..
so thinking this is velvet?

i raised the temp to 30 Deg C , wll this be enough?
also have salt in the tank.

thanks.

I know that temp will work with ich, but I am not sure if velvet will be killed by high temp or not. Sorry...I have read that a black out will help, but can't confirm that.

Malachite green can sometimes take quite a while to kill off Ick... I have had Ick cases that took 5 weeks to cure for one reason or another.

Something to consider is that Malachite Green and Formalin based medications do expire, and are extremely sensitive to light and temperature variation.

Maybe you should look at buying some new meds?

thanks!

maybe thats it! my malachite green has been with me for about morethan a year:D will go out to buy some new ones..

am a little hesitant in blacking out my tank.. am worried for my anubias plants..

I had a case of velvet once. I used maracide, salt and raised the temp. I don't think salt & temp alone would do it. You need a good parasite med. Even with that, it will probably get worse before it gets better.

Velvet, IMO, was harder to get rid of than ich. My discus had it for a short period in time and the temps + salt + quickcure didn't get rid of it. If you can find some, get medication that is specific to velvet or says that it treats it. I would raised your temps up to 88F if your fish can handle it; I would also add 1tblspn of salt/5g (slowly, especially if you have catfish or loaches).

It sounds like you're in the early stages right now if it is actually velvet. When/if your fish take on a velvety appearance when viewed from an angle, then your in trouble.

velvet or ich..

not really sure if its velvet or ich anymore..
they look better, only the tail is not clear.. and damaged.
but their body doesn't seem to have any anymore...
just changed water and added newly bought malachite green.
hope they get weel soon...:shake:
