Don't EVER remove protective cap from outside filter tube

Howdy... ever wonder WHY they put those screens on the bottom of the tubes for the outside filter?

With no fish left except the pleco and the mystery apple snail, I took it off so I could take advantage of that... get rid of all the "big" stuff floating around... I really didn't think either of the silly creatures in the tank would have a problem with it, both being so much bigger than the openeing.

Woke up the other morning to find the stupid mystery snail had managed to get himself half sucked up the tube...

I turned it off, and he dropped to the bottom like a rock. Didn't peek out of his shell for hours... wasn't sure he'd make it...

He's fine now. Eating away at the lettuce and other food...

but I did learn my lesson. Learn from mine!
