I bought a fiddler crab a while back to add to my 55 gal tank. After getting him home I read that they need occasional access to air, and my tank wouldn't work out for him. I've since moved him to a small 2 gal. tank. I put a little gravel in the tank and gave him some fish food until I find out what is good for fiddlers to eat. There is only about 2 inches of water in the tank.

Anyway, the tank stinks really bad. I don't have any filtration yet, so I assume this is why. I was wondering what would make a good and CHEAP setup for this situation. I don't really have a lot to spend on this little guy, but I want a decent environment for him. Recommendations?

Look for shark filters--they are completely submersed, have a little changeable filter media, and will do a good job. Other option is to get a small powerhead, and 'modify' a sponge to fit over the intake. Either will work nicely, the sharks are a little more pricy (not bad, under $30, as I recall, from PetSmart) and look better. The powerhead with a sponge will provide better bio-filtration.

I'd change water more frequently than for a regular tank--crabs seem to be odorous unless kept with lots of water/frequent changes. Make sure there's a lid--the little buggers like to climb up power cords, but don't bring a map with them.
