Hello,
I am a saltwater guy but my mom just bought a small Freshwater tank. For salt water we either use uncured live rock or throw in a couple dead shrimp to cycle the tank. Can the shrimp method be used for FW? I know ammonia can used but I won't be around to help her and she does not see the sense in adding a household cleaner to a fish tank!
 
Yep, the shrimp method will work just as well in FW. She will still need to test for ammonia and nitrite, and do water changes at once they hit 0 to remove the accumulated nitrates, unless the tank is planted.

She might do if the shrimp start to smell anything like it did when a friend of mine did his salt tank..... :)
