Generally speaking, no you shouldn't be able to smell your fishtank unless maybe your head is under the hood.

Even then you still shouldn't be smelling any foul stenches. It's generally an indication of bad water quality.

A healthy tank, one with plants has a fairly strong earthy smell. That is normal.

What is the swell like??? Like dead things?? Like methane??

My tanks have a smell to them.... but like Must4ng s4lly describes it... its an earthy smell. I can only smell the water when I am very close to the tank... generally when I'm doing a water change. I actually enjoy the smell :). I suppose if enough volume of tank water is put together in one place, it can produce a powerful enough smell.

I only smell the water when I raise the tops. Like Richer, it's not an unpleasent smell. IMO, smelly tanks are a good indication of overfeeding, or other water quality issues.
