Okay, let me start by saying that when my husband said he wanted to start a marine tank I was apprehensive to say the least. After some research on my part, I expressed much concern regarding the amount of work this was going to intail. Well, 5 months and 4 dead fish later, it gives me no pleasure to say that I was right! That being said, we are in disaster recovery mode.

We seem to have a case of either marine velvet or ich. I'm not sure which. I am on my way to buy a quarentine tank (I know we should have had one to start but I was overruled at the beginning). Once I get this tank, what's the best thing to treat the remaining clown and damsel with? Also, we have two shrimp, two crabs, and a starfish. Is there a way to treat the main tank without killing them? Or, if we let the tank sit fallow for a month, will the parasites die off or will they live in the crushed coral substrate? Do we need to tear down the system and start over?

Any help would be appreciated!

In my opinion that is the wrong approach. Fish get Ich because they are stressed out. Healthy fish that are not stressed out do not get ich. Cure the problem - what is causeing the stress not the syymptoms - ich.

How do you relieve the stress (at which point the fish will usually fight off the ich). First get the water parameters correct ( salinity, temperature, pH and tank has finished it's cycle). Insure they have adequate hiding/sleeping places in the tank so each fish has an area it feels secure in. Feed the fish a proper diet ( include spirulina in the diet- should be part of atleast 1 of the 3 or 4 feedings you give them each day).

i would put your remaining fish in the QT when you get it. you can use several different meds though, i used coppersafe in my QT, but there is also kent RXP which is copper free, and the hyposalinity treatment. your main system, if kept fish free, should be parasite free in about 4 weeks

since you only have 2 fish, i wouldnt treat the main tank, just put them in the QT and treat them. your inverts will not be affected by ich or velvet.
