On a 90g FWFO tank (not planted), would you use a canister or a w/d trickle with pump. If so, what model would you suggest?

I'm looking at putting a w/d on my 80 gallon I'm setting up, and may actually put a canister on also. I plan on building my own w/d, get what i want plus cheaper. I'm using this webpage as a basis for mine DIY wet/dry (http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/wetdry.htm)

I was actually thinking about using a rubber maid container for the sump and a 5 gallon bucket built up for the media. Nobody is really going to see it under the tank.

wet/drys. i love them and maintence is easy. im working on one for my pond. a rubbermaid box some eggcrate and a bucket should be less than 15 bucks and i brought about 75 bags of clearance easter grass a few weeks ago for about 5 dollars, tons of bio media.

Why would you use a canister also? Can't you incorporate the media into the w/d? Would you run the canister in series with the w/d or parallel?

You could just get 2 HOB filters like two Emperor 400s or something.

For just about any tank, I prefer two or more filters. I like the reduncancy: if one fails, or doesn't restart after a power outage, you still have some filtration.

Without knowing what type of fish you'd like to keep and how many of them you plan to have, it's almost impossible to give you really good advice. With a bit more detail, I'm sure we can give you advice tailored to your circumstances.

It was more of a general question. I understand that if they are a "messy" fish that there would need to be more mechanical filtration. I'm sure that there are many other keys to filter selection. I was just throwing it out there to see what people have ideas on - I'm in my teachable phase.

With the dual filtration would you run them in series or parallel. I'm assuming on parallel, or else the failure of one may disable the entire filtration system?

I prefer canister filters for FW environments (live plants benefit too..)....

The only canister filters I'd recommend is the Rena Filstar line.

What if the tank is not planted (except with fakes and/or decorations). Still canister over trickle? And what about the plumbing question? IS there total redundancy (which will cost more) or would you run them in-line with each other?
