are these guys tough to keep? also, i have read that they remove oxygen from the water? does that mean if i add one, i should increase the circulation i little bit?

Some are, some are not. I've had great luck with everything but tree sponges. The biggest problem is that they should never be removed from the water. Doing so can result in pockets of air inside of them, which eventually results in rotting areas. It's important to place them where there isn't a lot of bubbling (either from an air pump or powerhead, etc).
They don't remove any more oxygen than any other living critter--just enough to burn foods.
